Sony has introduced QSSR, a new AI-powered upscaling technology designed for the standard PlayStation 5 console. Unlike the PSSR feature exclusive to the PS5 Pro, QSSR utilizes a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation to optimize performance on existing hardware.

The company positions QSSR as a distinct performance tier rather than a replacement for the PSSR standard. Sony plans to provide the QSSR library to all PlayStation developers, enabling them to balance rendering resolution, performance, and image quality in future game titles.

The development of this upscaling solution is part of an ongoing collaboration between Sony and AMD under Project Amethyst. According to Jasmin Patry from Sucker Punch Productions, the technology improves the resolution of fine details and enhances temporal stability on the base console.

While QSSR aims to deliver sharper and more stable visuals, Sony clarifies that it does not transform the standard PS5 into a PS5 Pro. Instead, the feature serves as a software-level upgrade that allows users to experience improved image quality without requiring new hardware.
