Sony has officially discontinued its final standalone 4K Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, in the Japanese market. The company had already ceased supply of this model in February 2026, marking the end of its dedicated home video disc player lineup.

The PlayStation 5 remains the only Sony device capable of playing Blu-ray discs. However, industry trends suggest that future hardware, such as the potential PlayStation 6, is unlikely to include an optical drive as the physical media market continues to shrink.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that starting January 2028, it will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles. Future releases will transition exclusively to digital formats, though this policy does not affect existing physical media.

The decline of the standalone player market extends beyond Sony. LG stopped production of its Blu-ray players in 2024. While brands like Panasonic continue to offer such devices, the overall availability of hardware for physical media collectors is decreasing.
