Users of Sony Xperia smartphones report that a recent firmware update has disabled 5G connectivity in regions where the devices are not officially supported. The issue affects models including the Xperia 1 V and newer versions, with reports coming from users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European countries.
The problematic firmware version, 67.2.A.3.178, was released on June 29, 2026. While official release notes only mention a security patch update, users noted that the update effectively blocked a common workaround involving the dual-SIM dual-standby (DSDS) settings, which previously allowed access to 5G networks by bypassing carrier configuration restrictions.
Some users are attempting to restore 5G access by flashing modem files from specific Japanese firmware versions, a process that involves modifying low-level communication software. This method carries significant risks of device malfunction. Sony has not yet issued an official statement regarding these connectivity issues or the restrictions imposed by the update.
