Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-powered upscaling library designed for the standard PlayStation 5. The technology, which stems from the Amethyst project developed in collaboration with AMD, allows standard consoles to achieve improved image detail and temporal stability without the dedicated machine learning hardware found in the PS5 Pro.
Unlike the PSSR technology on the PS5 Pro that utilizes INT8 calculations, QSSR on the standard PS5 relies primarily on FP16 computations and packed math optimizations. Sony states that developers can integrate QSSR into existing titles with minimal code changes, typically requiring only a few days to adjust parameters such as texture streaming.
Initial implementation is available in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Testing in Marvel’s Wolverine showed that upscaling from 864p to 1440p increases frame render time by 1.5–1.8 ms, while 2160p output increases it by approximately 4.4 ms. In Ghost of Yōtei, QSSR performance is comparable to FSR 3 in performance mode.
Sony intends to make QSSR available to a wide range of PlayStation developers. The company suggests that developers can select various rendering and output resolutions based on specific graphical modes rather than defaulting to 4K, allowing for flexible performance management across different game titles.
