Solidigm, a subsidiary of SK hynix specializing in high-capacity data center SSDs, has officially confirmed its intention to construct a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States. The company aims to address the growing demand for storage solutions driven by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, as its current production capacity is insufficient to meet projected requirements.
Despite the need for capital to fund the expansion, SK hynix has decided to abandon plans for an IPO and pre-IPO funding for Solidigm. The parent company cited unfavorable market conditions, including increased volatility and a correction in semiconductor stock prices, as the primary reasons for this decision, noting that current valuations do not reflect the subsidiary's growth potential.
SK hynix is now exploring alternative financing mechanisms to support the construction of the new fab. Given Solidigm's strong profitability and its 21.1% share of the enterprise SSD market alongside its parent, the company may opt to fund the project through a combination of internally generated cash and debt, allowing it to retain full ownership of the subsidiary.
