Amazon has officially abandoned its plans to construct four new data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia. The company originally submitted its proposal for the project in July, targeting a former university campus for the development.

The decision follows significant pushback from local residents and officials regarding the potential environmental and infrastructural impact of the facilities. Concerns centered on high power consumption, noise levels, and the overall strain on local resources.

Following discussions in September between Amazon and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis J. Randall, the company opted to repurpose the site. Instead of data centers, the land will now be used for mixed-use and residential development.

Amazon’s vice president of data center development, Josh Weissman, stated that the company chose to avoid litigation and instead pursue a shared vision for the campus. The agreement aims to provide new community spaces and housing for local families.
