Karl Neuhold, head of exterior design at Skoda, has expressed surprise at the capabilities of artificial intelligence in automotive design. He noted that AI can generate polished renderings from simple sketches in seconds, significantly accelerating the creative process.

Neuhold suggests that designers must integrate AI into their workflows to remain competitive. However, he warns that increased productivity could lead to a reduction in the number of staff required in design studios, potentially impacting entry-level roles.

The designer highlighted concerns regarding the future of the talent pipeline. If junior designers have fewer opportunities to gain experience due to AI automation, the industry may face long-term challenges in developing professional skills.

Despite the efficiency of AI, Neuhold emphasizes that traditional skills remain essential. When evaluating job applicants, he continues to require hand-drawn sketches to assess creativity, as automotive design involves complex technical and regulatory requirements beyond mere image generation.

The industry also faces questions regarding intellectual property and brand identity. As rival manufacturers gain access to the same AI tools, there is a risk that vehicles may lose their distinctive design characteristics.
