Shopify has expanded its platform capabilities to allow browser-based AI agents to complete purchases directly on merchant websites. This update enables agents to move beyond product search and cart management by interacting directly with the checkout process.
The company introduced three new tools, get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout, which allow agents to inspect checkout details, modify shipping addresses or delivery options, and submit transactions once authorized by the buyer.
This functionality is built on the WebMCP standard and the Universal Commerce Protocol, which provide structured APIs for commerce tasks. These tools eliminate the need for agents to rely on screen scraping or navigating human-focused HTML.
The feature is currently rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants. Additionally, Shopify announced a new partnership with the AI agent Instinct, joining existing collaborator Muse in the platform's agentic commerce ecosystem.
