A US Senate investigation claims that major technology companies are providing misleading information regarding the economic benefits of their data centers. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chris Van Hollen stated that these corporations operate with a lack of transparency, failing to create the promised number of permanent jobs for local communities while benefiting from significant tax incentives.

The report highlights that sales-tax exemptions on computer equipment are particularly lucrative for these firms. Analysts estimate that 39% of total spending for a 1GW data center is directed toward high-cost GPUs. Consequently, if these facilities fail to deliver on promised economic growth, states face substantial revenue losses.

The investigation surveyed Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, CoreWeave, Digital Realty, and Equinix. These companies have resisted covering the costs of necessary infrastructure upgrades, such as power plants and transmission lines, despite previous pledges to pay their own way. They argue that such investments should not be their sole responsibility.

Previous legislative attempts to enforce a ratepayer protection pledge were rejected by senators who deemed the measures ineffective. Congress is now pursuing broader regulatory efforts to address the massive power consumption of AI infrastructure and the associated community concerns.
