US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is currently considered the leading candidate for the position of artificial intelligence czar under President Donald Trump. This potential appointment follows the administration's recent announcement regarding the creation of an AI Force to address concerns over technological risks.
According to reports, other individuals under consideration for the role include Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management. Sean Cairncross, the National Cyber Director, is also among the potential candidates for the position.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai stated that any information regarding personnel decisions not officially confirmed by the administration should be viewed as speculation. President Trump first disclosed his plans for the AI czar and the AI Force in a post on Truth Social on September 19.
The position of AI and crypto czar was previously held by David Sacks. He stepped down earlier this year after reaching the service limit for a special government employee. Despite leaving the post, Sacks continues to serve as an advisor to the president through the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
