Samsung Display has secured a three-year exclusive agreement to supply foldable OLED panels for Apple's iPhone Duo and its future iterations. Each panel is priced at approximately $250, making it one of the most expensive components in the device, trailing only the core chipset.
The iPhone Duo features a 7.8-inch flexible inner display that utilizes Samsung's M16 light-emitting material system. This technology improves peak brightness, color accuracy, and power efficiency while supporting Dolby Vision standards. The high cost of the panel is attributed to complex manufacturing processes, including ultra-thin glass lamination and rigorous fatigue testing.
Apple's decision to rely on a single supplier marks a shift from its traditional multi-sourcing strategy. While other manufacturers like BOE and LG Display possess flexible screen technology, Samsung Display is currently the only firm capable of meeting Apple's stringent requirements for crease control, nano-texture processing, and high-volume production yields.
The device, which carries a starting price of $1999, is scheduled for global pre-orders and delivery in October. Analysts note that while Apple competes with Samsung in the smartphone market, it remains dependent on the company for critical display components, which provides Samsung with significant upstream profit margins.
