Samsung System LSI is developing the M2800 5G modem, which will utilize a 2nm process. The company expects to complete development by 2027, with a potential debut in the Galaxy S28 series in 2028.
The upcoming Galaxy S27 series will feature the Exynos 2700 chip equipped with the M2700 modem. While this modem remains on a 4nm process, Samsung has optimized its design and algorithms to improve power efficiency and data transfer speeds.
Samsung implemented optical shrink technology to reduce the M2700 chip area by approximately 4% without changing the underlying manufacturing process. This approach aims to enhance efficiency while maintaining cost control.
The company is rebranding its modem lineup, moving away from the Shannon name to the new M-series designation. The M2700 modem will support the 3GPP Release 18 standard, offering improved cellular performance and enhanced non-terrestrial network capabilities for satellite communication and emergency services.
