Samsung and Arm are collaborating to develop AI chips for OpenAI, focusing on edge computing to accelerate AI performance on end-user devices. Samsung will be responsible for manufacturing these chips using a 2nm process technology.

The partnership involves Samsung Electronics' LSI division, which will actively participate in the chip design process rather than acting as a simple contract manufacturer. Samsung aims to leverage the experience gained from this collaboration with Arm to create custom AI chips for other future clients.

Arm will provide the architectural solutions necessary for local AI acceleration. Because OpenAI is planning a family of personal AI devices, these specialized chips are part of their broader development strategy.

Arm intends to protect its intellectual property provided for this project, making the development highly specialized. Samsung will have the right to produce and sell the final chip to end customers, with OpenAI being the primary target.
