Samsung has initiated trial production of 2nm AI5 chips for Tesla at its new facility in Taylor, Texas. The project is ahead of schedule, with full-scale manufacturing expected to begin next year. The site will focus on producing chips for Tesla's electric vehicles, Optimus robots, and data centers.
The expansion in Texas is supported by a $16.5 billion agreement signed between the two companies last year. Samsung accelerated the timeline due to high demand for AI chips and the full capacity utilization of its existing production lines in South Korea, which currently handle 4nm and 2nm processes.
Samsung plans to construct a second facility in the region to support 1.4nm chip production, with construction starting later this year and completion slated for 2030. The company aims to strengthen its competitive position against TSMC and maintain its lead over SMIC, which currently trails Samsung by only 0.5% in foundry revenue.
