Patrick Lowry, CEO of Samara Asset Group, argues that labeling firms as Bitcoin treasury companies is detrimental to shareholders. He suggests the market is currently rejecting pure treasury strategies, with the notable exception of MicroStrategy.

Lowry criticizes the digital gold narrative, claiming it incorrectly positioned Bitcoin as a static investment rather than a functional currency. He believes this framing makes Bitcoin vulnerable to price drops whenever the Federal Reserve discusses interest rate hikes.

Samara Asset Group operates differently by utilizing Bitcoin as working capital. The company holds venture fund commitments in Bitcoin and liquidates these holdings to meet capital calls, regardless of the current market price.

The firm manages Bitcoin as working capital across more than 20 funds. Lowry emphasizes that holding Bitcoin as a passive treasury reserve can create a hurdle rate problem, ultimately failing to serve the best interests of shareholders.
