S&P Global has finalized the acquisition of OpenZeppelin, a UK-based firm specializing in smart contract security. The deal, first announced on September 17, 2026, aims to enhance the rating agency's ability to evaluate technology risks associated with tokenized assets and onchain finance.
Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides open-source smart contract libraries that have supported over $37 trillion in cumulative value. The firm has conducted more than 900 security engagements and identified over 10,000 vulnerabilities in various projects.
OpenZeppelin will function as an independent business unit, retaining its name and leadership. CEO Demian Brener will report to Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and S&P Global does not anticipate a material impact on its financial results.
The acquisition follows a recent collaboration between OpenZeppelin and Chainlink, announced on October 20, 2026, which focuses on integrating compliance features for cross-chain functionality. Advisors for the deal included Jefferies, Clifford Chance, FT Partners, and Cooley.
