S&P Global has entered into an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin, a company specializing in smart contract security. The deal aims to integrate OpenZeppelin’s technical tools and expertise into S&P Global’s risk assessment framework, specifically targeting the infrastructure of tokenized financial products and blockchain-based assets.
OpenZeppelin, founded in 2015, provides open-source smart contract libraries and security services. Its code currently supports more than $37 trillion in value across stablecoins, DeFi protocols, and tokenized funds. The company will continue to operate as a separate business unit under its own brand.
CEO and co-founder Demian Brener will remain in his position, reporting to Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings. The acquisition is part of S&P Global's strategy to provide data, benchmarks, and risk assessments for financial institutions as they increasingly adopt blockchain technology for asset management.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. S&P Global stated that the acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on its financial results. This move follows the company's previous initiatives in the digital asset space, including the development of the S&P Digital Markets 50 Index.
