The ProMeBa research project, launched in June 2026, aims to develop scalable manufacturing processes for multi-layer battery electrodes. The initiative is scheduled to run until May 2029 and is funded under a scheme by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

The project focuses on producing multi-layer anodes and cathodes that improve ion transport, mechanical stability, and battery lifespan. Researchers at the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components at RWTH Aachen are leading the development of formulations and laboratory-scale characterization.

To achieve industrial scalability, the team is designing a modular coating system compatible with existing pilot plants. The study evaluates two roll-to-roll production methods: multi-layer slot die coating and curtain coating, alongside an inline viscosity measurement technique for quality control.

Netzsch-Gerätebau GmbH coordinates the project, which includes partners such as the ISEA Chair at RWTH Aachen, Fraunhofer IKTS, the iPAT Institute at TU Braunschweig, and 8inks Deutschland. The goal is to create a drop-in technology that integrates into current production infrastructure.
