The Russian Ministry of Digital Development has initiated negotiations with Apple to enable 5G connectivity on iPhones within the country. As of September 17, 2026, 5G networks are operational in 16 Russian cities, covering 10 million subscribers, though currently, the service is only available on Android devices.

The Russian State Commission for Radio Frequencies authorized operators Beeline, Megafon, MTS, and T2 to utilize existing LTE frequencies for 5G services in August 2026. While iPhone hardware supports the n79 5G band, Apple requires successful network compatibility testing before officially enabling the feature for local carriers.

Beyond current 5G developments, the government is looking toward future connectivity. The Ministry has allocated 750 ₽ million to Skoltech and the National Research Center for Telecommunications to establish a foundation for 6G technology, with pilot zones expected by 2028 and a broader technological framework targeted for 2030–2032.
