Russia may launch Tanzania's first remote sensing satellite in March 2027 using a Russian launch vehicle. While this timeline has been reported by media, it has not received official confirmation.
On October 28, Roscosmos and Tanzania's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed a memorandum of understanding at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow. The agreement covers satellite development, launch services, ground infrastructure, and training programs.
Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov noted that Tanzania aims to develop its own space capabilities with Russian assistance. This includes training students and providing expert support for establishing a national space agency.
The satellite is intended for monitoring agriculture, forests, water resources, and mineral deposits. However, specific technical characteristics and mission objectives for the spacecraft remain undefined.
Russia continues to expand its space cooperation across Africa. Previous projects include the development of the EgyptSat satellite for Egypt and the deployment of a GLONASS station in South Africa.
