The image, captured on October 7, 2014, shows the Rosetta spacecraft while it was positioned 472 million kilometers from Earth. At that moment, the probe was 16 kilometers from the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The photograph features one of the 14-meter-long solar arrays of the spacecraft. The final image was created by combining two exposures, one short and one long, to manage the high contrast of the scene.

The photo was taken using the CIVA camera system installed on the Philae lander, which was still attached to the orbiter at the time. The lander separated from Rosetta on November 12, 2014, to begin its descent to the comet.
