Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and a major Democratic donor, stated on September 16 at the POLITICO Decoded Summit that the marketing of artificial intelligence to the American public has been ineffective. He argued that the current discourse is polarized between those demanding rapid acceleration and those calling for a complete halt to development.

Hoffman noted that public anxiety regarding AI is rising due to fears of job displacement and increased energy consumption by data centers. He highlighted that many people perceive the benefits of the technology as being concentrated among a small group, while risks remain widespread.

The discussion coincides with warnings from industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who have raised concerns about the dangers of advanced AI systems. Conversely, President Donald Trump has expressed support for US leadership in AI and rejected calls for development pauses.

Hoffman suggested that a tech-optimist candidate could succeed in the 2028 presidential election. However, he emphasized that such a candidate must shift their messaging from abstract future promises to demonstrating practical, everyday benefits for voters.
