The RedByteFX library, now in version 1.2.0, provides a Kotlin DSL for OpenGL ES development on Android. It enables developers to write 3D graphics and GPU compute shaders using Kotlin code, supporting API level 24 and above.

The library automates complex tasks such as shader compilation, uniform management, and memory buffer alignment. It handles std140 and std430 layout requirements automatically, preventing common errors associated with manual buffer management and memory barriers in GLES.

To demonstrate the library, the author implemented a 3D version of Conway's Game of Life. The project uses compute shaders to calculate generations and renders thousands of cells as instances. The source code is available in the life3d repository.

RedByteFX integrates with Jetpack Compose through GlSurface and GlCompute hosts. It manages the EGL context lifecycle, handles thread synchronization between the UI and GL threads, and provides state-based error reporting for shader linking.
