Readwise has launched a new application, Readwise Books, designed to serve as both an e-book store and a reading tracker. The platform allows users to purchase, read, and monitor their progress, positioning itself as a competitor to Amazon’s Kindle and Goodreads ecosystem.

The app provides detailed reading analytics, including data on reading pace, session depth, and total words read. Users can access millions of e-books from major publishers, as well as print books and audiobooks. The service is currently available in the U.S., with plans for international expansion.

Readwise supports the import of DRM-free EPUB files and offers features to track reading sessions from external sources, such as Kindle’s Cloud Reader or physical books via photo recognition. The app also includes text-to-speech functionality.

The company is integrating AI-powered tools, such as session recaps and term lookups, with initial support from Harper Collins. Additionally, the platform features a public API and an MCP server to support AI agents and third-party integrations.

Readwise Books is currently free to use, though the company plans to place certain AI features behind a paywall. The startup’s existing highlight-tracking apps are priced at $7.99 per month for individual services or $9.99 per month for both.
