Qualcomm and Huawei have signed a long-term licensing agreement covering 5G networking and artificial intelligence technologies. Under the terms of the deal, Qualcomm will acquire specific US-registered patents from Huawei related to computing, AI, and data transmission. This marks the first time such an agreement includes 5G technologies developed by Huawei.
The deal also grants Qualcomm access to Huawei’s LogicFolding technology, which increases transistor density in chip design. This acquisition of rights to a Chinese-developed technology by a US firm is considered a significant industry precedent. Qualcomm will now be able to integrate this method into its own semiconductor development processes.
Following this agreement, the total value of Huawei's licensing portfolio is expected to exceed $6,9 billion. Huawei has focused on monetizing its research and development since 2021, following a period of heavy investment necessitated by US sanctions starting in 2019. The company has been actively expanding its licensing partnerships with Western firms, including HP Inc.
