Qualcomm is reportedly developing a new flagship SoC, codenamed Honu and internally designated as SM8A75, which may be branded as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 7. The chip is expected to utilize TSMC's 2nm N2P process node to balance manufacturing costs and development risks.
The processor aims to push CPU clock speeds to a range of 5.3GHz to 5.4GHz. Despite these higher frequencies, early leaks suggest that performance gains in Geekbench 6 tests will likely remain under 10% compared to current flagship platforms, indicating a focus on incremental improvements rather than a generational leap.
Qualcomm intends to maintain power consumption levels in single-core scenarios similar to the existing Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company is leveraging its Offset PoP packaging technology, which optimizes memory and processor layout to improve thermal management and support higher operating frequencies.
Industry analysts suggest that if performance gains are limited to 10%, Qualcomm may adopt a stable pricing strategy to encourage adoption by smartphone manufacturers. The shift toward more mature 2nm production lines is expected to help the company manage wafer costs as it navigates the physical limits of heat and stability.
