Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX, has officially launched the commercial operation of its GTF Advantage turbofan engine. The first aircraft to feature this new propulsion system is the Airbus A321XLR, which has been delivered to United Airlines.
The GTF Advantage is an upgraded version of the PW1100G-JM engine currently powering the Airbus A320neo family. According to the manufacturer, the new engine provides 4–8% more takeoff thrust, which is critical for the A321XLR's long-range capabilities of up to 8700 km.
The engine design focuses on increased durability, allowing it to remain on the wing for twice as long as the previous version between maintenance intervals. Pratt & Whitney achieved this by upgrading components exposed to high temperatures.
The company plans to transition all production of the PW1100G-JM engine to the GTF Advantage standard by 2028. Existing engines will also benefit from the GTF Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade package, which can be installed during routine maintenance to improve service life by 90–95%.
