Porsche has filed a patent for a simulated manual gearbox system based on a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The filing, identified as DE102025109563A1, was discovered at the European Patent Office and builds upon the company's previous work on shift-by-wire gear selectors.
The proposed system features three distinct configurations. The first operates as a traditional automatic transmission. The second allows for sequential shifting via paddle shifters or a lever. The third mode provides a full manual experience, utilizing a third pedal to operate a clutch and a multi-stable gear selector.
According to the patent documentation, this technology is designed to be compatible with both internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicle platforms. The system aims to recreate the physical experience of manual shifting through software-controlled gear patterns.
Other manufacturers are exploring similar technologies. Koenigsegg utilizes its Light Speed Transmission and Engage Shift System, while Ferrari introduced the 12Cilindri Manuale. Additionally, Hyundai has previously patented a shift-by-wire system intended for potential use in future electric vehicles.
