Pope Leo XIV has publicly criticized AI-generated art, emphasizing a fundamental distinction between human creativity and machine output. In a recent post on X, the pontiff argued that algorithms rely on statistical calculations derived from existing works, which he claims lacks the essential human spark.
This stance follows an encyclical letter issued by the Pope in May, which addressed the broader implications of automation and the preservation of human dignity. The Vatican's position remains firm despite efforts by AI developers to influence church policy.
According to a report by the New York Times, the AI company Anthropic has attempted to lobby the Vatican to change its perspective on non-human consciousness. These efforts have reportedly yielded little success in shifting the official stance of the church.
