Plaion has postponed the release of the NeoGeo AES+ console until late 2027. The delay is attributed to a shortage of memory components, which has been exacerbated by high demand and the impact of AI development on the RAM market.
The AES+ is designed as a hardware-accurate replica of the original NeoGeo AES rather than an emulation-based system. It utilizes dedicated ASIC chips and modern versions of processors like the Motorola 68000 and Zilog Z80A to ensure compatibility with original cartridges.
The project team includes MiSTER core developer Jotego. The console supports 5 V power delivery for direct cartridge compatibility. Plaion plans to re-release ten classic titles, including Metal Slug and King of Fighters 2002, in cartridge format.
Pricing for the console starts at $249.99 or €199.99 for the base model. The Anniversary Edition is priced at $349.99 or €299.99, while the Ultimate Edition, which includes all ten games and additional controllers, costs $999.99 or €899.99.
