The NASA Perseverance rover captured a 360-degree panoramic view of the Neretva Vallis region located inside the Jezero Crater on Mars. The resulting image was compiled from 217 individual frames taken by the Mastcam-Z instrument on May 20, 2024, which marked the 1,155th sol of the mission.
The processed image features enhanced colors to highlight visual contrast and variations in the terrain. While the area currently appears as a dusty, wind-swept landscape, data indicates that it previously served as a river channel that supplied fresh water to the crater billions of years ago.
Operations for the Mastcam-Z instrument are directed by Arizona State University. The project involves collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems for camera development and the Niels Bohr Institute for calibration target design. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed by Caltech, oversees the rover's mission.
