OpenAI unveiled its new 'Dots' agents at the DevDay conference in San Francisco on September 29, 2026. These agents operate as 'always-on' assistants equipped with their own cloud-based virtual machines, including file storage, terminals, and web browsers. They can perform background tasks such as managing emails, updating code, and handling project documentation while users focus on other work.
The company introduced the GPT-6.1 Sol model, which is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to the Astra flagship. It offers performance levels close to Astra at approximately one-fifth of the price. The model supports 1.05 million input tokens and 128,000 output tokens, featuring integration with various tools like web search, code interpretation, and computer use capabilities.
A new premium speed mode called 'Ultrafast' was launched, offering up to 8 times faster token generation for Codex and 6 times faster for API, powered by Cerebras chips. Additionally, OpenAI introduced the 'Pro 500' subscription plan priced at $500 per month, which provides significantly higher usage limits and includes the Ultrafast mode.
OpenAI also announced 'ChatGPT Space' for collaborative work between humans and agents. The company implemented 'Custom Rules' and read-only modes for background research to address security concerns. These features allow users to define permissions for agent actions, such as requiring manual confirmation for sensitive tasks like password changes or data deletion.
