OpenAI has established a new Creator Product division, appointing Sam Yam, the co-founder and former CTO of Patreon, to lead the unit. Yam announced his transition to the company on September 23, marking a significant shift in his career after more than 13 years at the subscription platform.
The new division will also include two other former Patreon executives: Drew Rowny, the former head of product, and Shannon Ma, the former head of engineering. Both individuals resigned from their positions at Patreon in recent weeks to join the team at OpenAI.
The team intends to develop AI-native tools designed for creators and their communities. While specific product details remain limited, Yam stated that the group plans to provide early access to these new instruments, with a potential preview expected at the upcoming OpenAI DevDay event.
Patreon, founded in 2013 by Yam and musician Jack Conte, has facilitated over $10 billion in earnings for creators since its inception. The departing executives were instrumental in building the infrastructure for payments, membership tiers, and audience analytics that define the platform.
