OpenAI has released an official ChatGPT plugin for Microsoft Word, available to all users across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. The tool allows users to edit text, summarize reports, fix formatting, and unify terminology directly within the document interface.

The plugin supports advanced features for paid and enterprise accounts, including the ability to integrate external data from Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox. Business and Enterprise users can access the GPT-5.6 Sol model for free during a preview period from September 17 to September 30.

Usage is billed based on token consumption according to the model's API rates, sharing a quota with other tools like Codex. The plugin operates independently of the web-based ChatGPT, meaning conversation history and user preferences do not sync between the two platforms.

Starting October 1, 2026, the ChatGPT for Word plugin will be enabled by default in enterprise workspaces. The tool is designed to function alongside existing solutions from Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic’s Claude for Word, which offers similar document-editing capabilities.

OpenAI also introduced an Appshots feature for its Windows desktop application. By pressing the Alt key twice, users can capture screenshots and text from any active window to send directly to ChatGPT, further reducing the need for manual copy-pasting.
