OpenAI has introduced two new shopping features for ChatGPT, now available to users worldwide. The update allows users to upload selfies or full-body photos to preview how clothing and accessories appear on them. By uploading product images or screenshots, users can prompt the AI to synthesize items onto their photos, with a new 'Try On' button appearing in the results.

These capabilities are powered by the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. According to OpenAI, this model delivers improved lighting, richer textures, and better adherence to image editing instructions, while also reducing generation time. Additionally, a new 'Collections' feature enables users to save items of interest to an in-app library, where generated try-on images are also stored.

ChatGPT can now suggest matching items based on user-described styles or identify and locate purchasable clothing from photos of celebrity outfits. This expansion marks OpenAI's entry into the fashion discovery market, a space currently dominated by platforms like Pinterest and Google, which launched its own virtual try-on tool last year.

The company is actively refining its shopping strategy following the underwhelming performance of its previous instant checkout feature. The industry remains cautious regarding AI-driven shopping, as evidenced by user reactions to aggressive product recommendations from startups like Instinct. It remains to be seen if ChatGPT will become a primary tool for fashion inspiration.
