OpenAI is experiencing unprecedented demand for its new GPT-6 Astra model, which was released on September 3. Tibo Sottiaux, head of Codex at OpenAI, stated that the company is currently mobilizing all available resources to maintain service stability for existing users.
Due to the high load, OpenAI may temporarily suspend new Pro subscriptions if demand continues to rise. This measure aims to prioritize the experience of current subscribers and prevent service degradation across the platform.
The launch of Astra initially faced capacity constraints, leading to access issues for some paid users. In response, OpenAI introduced a compensation mechanism where users receive usage quota resets for every day they cannot access the model.
OpenAI has optimized the model for long-tail usage scenarios, which the company claims can reduce quota consumption to between one-quarter and one-third of previous levels. Despite these efforts, users continue to report high server loads.
The potential suspension of new subscriptions will not affect existing users, and the company confirmed that Codex will remain available in both free and Plus plans. CEO Sam Altman previously described the initial rollout of the model as chaotic.
