OpenAI reports that ChatGPT search volume has reached approximately one-fifth of the volume processed by Google. The company clarifies that this figure refers to total query volume rather than market share. According to the Signals v3.0 report, which covers the period from July through September 2026, about 20.1% of messages sent to ChatGPT are classified as information-seeking queries.
External estimates indicate that ChatGPT processed roughly 2.5 billion prompts daily as of mid-2025, which corresponds to about 18% of Google's daily search volume based on January 2025 data. However, when analysts isolate search-specific activity, the figures decrease. Data from seoClarity in October 2026 suggests a 7.5% share, while Ahrefs estimated a 12% share in February 2026.
The user base for OpenAI services reached 1.2 billion weekly users by late September 2026. Despite the growth in query volume, Google continues to dominate in referral traffic. Google sends approximately 190 times more traffic to external websites than ChatGPT. ChatGPT maintains a click-through rate of less than 1%, as its model is designed to provide answers directly within the interface.
The discrepancy in market share estimates stems from different definitions of what constitutes a search query. While OpenAI utilizes a broader definition to compare its volume to Google, external trackers often focus on search-like activity. This measurement gap highlights the structural differences between the two platforms, as Google functions primarily as a referral engine for web traffic.
