Nvidia is exploring the integration of glass substrates into its chip manufacturing process to boost the performance of artificial intelligence processors. The company aims to increase the capacity for high-bandwidth memory, which would significantly accelerate data processing speeds for high-performance computing tasks.
German equipment manufacturer SCHMID is collaborating with key suppliers in the supply chains of Nvidia, Intel, and AMD to develop specialized glass core substrate technology. The company confirmed this initiative in its recent first-half financial report, highlighting its focus on advancing next-generation packaging solutions.
Despite the strategic interest, technical hurdles remain. Roland Rettenmaier, Chief Strategy Officer at SCHMID, noted that the metallization of through-glass vias remains a significant challenge. Furthermore, the certification process for these components by end customers has not yet been completed.
Nvidia is actively pursuing this transition to maintain its competitive edge in the AI market. CEO Jensen Huang has held discussions with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won regarding semiconductor collaboration and has urged TSMC to accelerate the development of glass substrate technologies for future GPU architectures.
