Nvidia released the GeForce GTX 1060 in the summer of 2016, marking nearly a decade of service for the Pascal-based graphics card. At launch, the 6GB version was priced at $249, while the Founders Edition cost $299. The card offered performance comparable to the previous generation flagship, the GTX 980.

The product line later expanded with a 3GB variant, which featured 1,152 CUDA cores compared to the 1,280 cores in the 6GB model. The GTX 1060 held the top spot in the monthly Steam hardware survey for years, maintaining its lead until 2022 when it was surpassed by the GTX 1650.

Nvidia announced in 2025 that the 580 series drivers will be the final branch to provide Game Ready support for the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures. The company has committed to providing security updates for these architectures until October 2028.
