A new production facility for multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been launched in Novosibirsk. The project is a joint effort between the NTI Center of Excellence and the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The NTI Foundation invested 680 ₽ million over three years to cover research, development, and equipment procurement. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, as a significant portion of these materials is currently imported.

Carbon nanotubes are used as additives in plastics, rubber, and paints to enhance fire resistance and electrical conductivity. These materials are intended for industrial applications, including the protection of facilities against fires caused by drone attacks and the transport of fuel.

The material is produced in specialized reactors using carbon-containing gas and catalysts. The resulting nanotubes are hollow cylindrical structures, appearing as a black powder, with a thickness thousands of times smaller than a human hair.
