Nolla Health has received regulatory approval in Utah to launch a pilot project for AI-automated prescriptions. The startup is the first in the United States permitted to issue prescriptions for acne treatments with minimal human oversight.
The Nolla Derm app for iOS allows users to consult an AI agent, upload facial scans, and receive treatment plans. The system selects topical medications from a physician-approved list. Requests falling outside strict parameters are forwarded to licensed human doctors.
The pilot program consists of three stages. Initially, two physicians will review every prescription for at least 100 patients. In the second stage, the AI will issue prescriptions directly for 500 patients with retrospective reviews. In the final stage, physicians will review at least 10% of monthly automated prescriptions.
The project operates within the Utah AI Learning Lab sandbox. The system is restricted to topical acne treatments and cannot prescribe isotretinoin or oral medications. Nolla Health plans to expand to other conditions like the flu or urinary tract infections if the pilot succeeds.
