Nintendo has officially confirmed that it has no plans to discontinue the release of physical game media. Bill van Zyll, Vice President and head of Nintendo in Latin America, made this statement during the Game Show 2026 event in Brazil, emphasizing the company's commitment to consumer preferences.
According to van Zyll, physical game copies remain particularly popular in Latin America and Brazil compared to other global markets. Consumers in these regions value the ability to collect, trade, and resell physical games after completion. Nintendo continues to monitor these regional trends while maintaining a neutral stance on distribution formats.
The announcement follows a decision by Sony to phase out new physical game releases starting in January 2028. While Sony reports that approximately 85 percent of its game sales are currently digital, the company will continue to produce discs for older titles and fulfill specific publisher requests for additional print runs.
