The report titled Prevention First: Building a Smarter Defense Against Payments Fraud was released by PYMNTS Intelligence in partnership with Bottomline. It analyzes current strategies for mitigating risks associated with outbound vendor and supplier payments.

The study is based on a survey conducted in July 2026 among 150 treasury and finance executives in the United States. All participating companies report annual revenues of at least $100 million.

Researchers categorized the participants based on their use of technology. Out of the total sample, 65 firms currently utilize artificial intelligence or machine learning tools for fraud detection, while 85 companies do not.

The analysis focuses exclusively on payables fraud and excludes receivables. It covers various industry sectors, including technology, services, and goods, to provide insights into how large organizations are restructuring their payment verification processes.
