The Union Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with Shandong Beiming Medical Technology, has developed a brain-computer interface system for fine motor reconstruction. This technology utilizes high-channel matrix electrical stimulation to independently control stimulation points, allowing for precise activation of forearm muscle groups.
The system enables users to perform complex movements, including independent finger flexion and extension, as well as coordinated multi-finger actions. During clinical trials, the first patient, who suffered from hemiplegia, successfully played three songs on an electronic keyboard, including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, after two months of rehabilitation training.
The patient demonstrated significant improvements in finger sensitivity and strength, along with a reduction in hand tremors. Beyond playing music, the participant regained the ability to perform daily tasks such as writing. Professor Jiang Xiaobing stated that the research team plans to enhance decoding accuracy and expand the technology to control lower limb and full-body muscle movements.
