Coherence Neuro, founded in 2022, is developing SOMA, a coin-sized implant designed to monitor and treat brain tumors by detecting electrical signals. The company aims to target glioblastoma, with plans to initiate its first chronic human implants in 2027.
In June 2026, the startup conducted safety tests of a temporary device version on three patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The company previously closed a $10 million seed round in November 2025, led by Artesian and Topology Ventures, with participation from Blackbird.
While Coherence focuses on clinical, disease-specific applications, OpenAI has directed its neurotech investments elsewhere. In January 2026, OpenAI participated in a $252 million seed round for Merge Labs, a venture co-founded by Sam Altman that develops non-invasive, ultrasound-based brain-computer interfaces.
The neurotech sector is currently bifurcating into two distinct paths: broad interface technologies, such as those pursued by Merge Labs and Neuralink, and specialized clinical devices like SOMA. Other industry players include Synchron, which has established a partnership with Nvidia.
