The National Institutes of Health and NASA have launched the QuSAFE Challenge to advance quantum-enabled sensing for in vitro non-animal methods. The initiative focuses on improving drug safety and reducing animal testing through technologies like organoids and microphysiological systems.

Current conventional assays often lack the sensitivity required to detect weak biological signals and are frequently invasive. Quantum-enabled sensing aims to provide ultra-high sensitivity, nanoscale resolution, and improved signal-to-noise performance to overcome these existing measurement limitations.

The challenge supports NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division by fostering the development of advanced detection methods suitable for environments beyond traditional laboratories. These innovations are intended to enhance space exploration capabilities and provide scientific benefits for both space and Earth-based research.
