Morgan Stanley has launched a Digital Asset Lab to experiment with stablecoins, tokenization, and decentralized finance. The bank manages $9.3 trillion in client assets and aims to integrate blockchain infrastructure across its wealth management and institutional operations.
Amy Oldenburg, head of digital-asset strategy since January, oversees these initiatives. In February, the firm filed for a national trust bank charter, Morgan Stanley Digital Trust, to handle custody, staking, and trading of digital assets internally.
The bank has launched the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust and exchange-traded products for ether and solana. Through a partnership with Zerohash, it enabled spot trading on E*Trade and plans to release a proprietary digital wallet later this year.
In April, the firm introduced the Stablecoin Reserves Portfolio (MSNXX) to assist stablecoin issuers with reserve requirements. Future plans include exploring tokenized money market funds to improve transaction speed and reduce costs.
