Mistral AI has demonstrated the capabilities of its new flagship model, Mistral Large 4, by generating a quantum chemistry solver from a short prompt. The model autonomously wrote the code, validated the results against existing tools, and created an interactive 3D visualization of molecular orbitals.

The model, internally nicknamed Le Chonk, features approximately 1 trillion parameters in total, with about 52 billion parameters active per token. It also includes a 1.6 billion-parameter vision encoder for multimodal tasks. Training was conducted on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs.

Mistral released a public preview of the model on October 6, 2026, followed by an open-weights release on October 29, 2026. This allows researchers and developers to download the model for local execution, independent verification, and fine-tuning on their own hardware.

The company highlights the model's ability to perform Hartree-Fock simulations without human intervention. By providing open weights, Mistral enables academic labs to independently benchmark the model's performance in scientific applications, moving beyond the company's initial demonstration.
