The tool allows users to delegate complex, long-term automation tasks within a secure environment. Once a task is assigned, the AI can work independently for hours or days to complete entire workflows, such as gathering materials, creating spreadsheets, and generating presentations.
In a demonstrated case, Project Opal analyzed one month of outdoor camera footage to identify animal appearances, clip the best segments, and create a highlight video. The system added camera sources, dates, and species labels to each record before compiling them into a spreadsheet for retrieval and statistics.
After organizing the data, Copilot generates a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the results and shares the video, spreadsheet, and presentation via Microsoft Teams for team review.
To start a task, users access the Frontier module in the desktop or web version of Microsoft 365 Copilot, enter requirements, and click 'Start'. The system then generates an execution plan and launches a dedicated Windows 365 Cloud PC, where a reasoning model manages the browser to perform the operations.
Early applications include quarterly compliance audits, group membership applications, timesheet and leave requests, and new employee onboarding. In audit scenarios, Project Opal can access approved websites, collect screenshots, and verify documents, saving engineers up to 20 hours per week.
