Microsoft has encountered construction delays for its planned AI data center in Loughton, Essex. The project, developed in partnership with Nscale and Nvidia, is currently stalled due to insufficient power grid capacity.
Local power grid officials notified Nscale that electricity supply for the site may not be available until the 2030s. Consequently, Microsoft has terminated its agreement for the specific location in Essex.
Despite the cancellation, Nscale continues to seek alternative power sources for its operations. The situation highlights broader industry challenges, including ongoing shortages in labor, equipment, and necessary permits.
Market observers are also tracking potential regulatory shifts in Texas. Discussions regarding a possible moratorium on data center construction involve state officials, including Governor Greg Abbott and the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
